Arch Dam

A concrete, masonry, or timber dam with the alignment curved upstream so as to transmit the major part of the water load to the abutments. This dam type is similar to a gravity structure however arch dams utilize a narrowing upstream curve which directs water pressure against the shoreline, providing the force to compress and maintain the strength of the dam.
