Dr. Michael J. Sale is the Executive Director of the Low Impact Hydropower Institute, effective February 1, 2013. Mike has worked in the U.S. hydropower arena for more than 30 years and has been a charter member of LIHI’s Governing Board. He was a distinguished research staff member and manager at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from which he retired emeritus in 2008, and now works as an independent consultant, providing technical support on energy, water, and environmental issues to sponsors such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Wind and Water Power Technologies Program. At ORNL, Dr. Sale was a Distinguished Research Staff Member in the Environmental Sciences Division of ORNL, where he had worked from1980 to 2008. His academic background includes a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Michigan, a M.S. in Aquatic Ecology from the University of Illinois, and a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering and Science from the University of Illinois. He is an expert in a wide range of water resources issues, especially those related to energy development and aquatic ecology, and he has a long record of managing hydropower projects for DOE, FERC, EPRI, and other clients.
